Picture in Time: Blackpool Balloon 702

After last week’s photo of a tram returning to depot at Manchester Square we remain in the same location to see another tram doing the very same manoeuvre.

Again dating from June 1993 in this photo we see two Balloon Cars – led by 702 – at Manchester Square. 702 is off back to Rigby Road Depot at the end of its days work. It is in the then standard 1990s green and cream fleet livery style and also features a “T” advert for Tower World – the brand that Blackpool Tower was known as at the time.

702 had entered service in 1934 and received its first pantograph in 1991. It remained in service until 2009 when withdrawal came but not before it was used on the last night of traditional trams to Fleetwood in November of that year. It departed Blackpool for the last time in 2010 and can now be found stored at the Heaton Park Tramway.
