Businesses urged to support Douglas Horse Tramway

Douglas Council are inviting businesses to partner with them to support the Horse Tramway service – now in its 137th year of operation – as they seek to try and reverse the losses suffered in recent years in operating the service along the Promenade in Douglas. Exact details of how businesses could support the service have not actually been announced with a suggestion that this could mean advertising on the side of the trams met with a response of “we are open to suggestions”.

Cllr Stephen Pitts, Regeneration and community lead member, said: “The horse tram service continues to attract not only local and international fans of vintage transport but also film crews from the UK and further afield. In recent years the council has been pleased to have partnered with local companies when organising large-scale events as, along with welcome financial support, partnership working brings new perspectives and
new ideas. It is against this background that the council is extending this invitation to become involved with what is acknowledged as the oldest horse-drawn tramway in the world still in regular service.”

The Douglas Horse Tramway’s 2013 season is due to commence operation on Monday 13th May and end on Sunday 15th September.
