Picture in Time: Midland Metro construction

We head back to July 1998 for this week’s modern tram edition of Picture in Time although there isn’t a tram in sight.

We are looking at the Wolverhampton St George’s terminus which is under construction on 10th July 1998 with the Birmingham Midshires building telling us that the temperate is 22 degrees. The basic platform structure is in place and the trackwork seems to be all down as well. This was the original layout here allowing trams terminating to access either side of the island platform – a condition it is no longer in, of course, with the right hand face as seen here now track free. It would be nearly a year later in May 1999 that passengers would be able to board a tram here.
