Picture in Time: Croydon Tramlink 2545

The southernmost modern tram system in the UK is that which serves South London, now known as London Tramlink when it first start services it was more location specific as Croydon Tramlink. Over the next few weeks we will be taking a look at some images from the earlier years of this system.

In this image we see CR4000 2545 during the construction phase of the system. The tram is close to Wandle Park just as the line goes from double to single track heading into Croydon Town Centre. Note the rather optimistic destination on the tram with 2545 apparently on a line 16 journey to Streatham! The date of this image is 10th April 1999 and at this point the tram had only been in the UK for less than a month with its arrival at Therapia Lane only being recorded on 15th March. Of course, 2545 was in the original Red and White livery. It was going to be another year before passengers would be able to travel on board a tram at this location.
