Metrolink Service Performance Update

The latest service performance statistics on the Manchester Metrolink system have been released on the TfGM Committee website – http://www.transportforgreatermanchestercommittee.gov.uk/downloads/file/4496/item_05_metrolink_service_performance.
This latest report looks at periods 5 and 6 which are between Monday 20th August and Sunday 14th October 2012.

Performance

Performance as measured by Operated Mileage was at 98.77% in period 5 and 99.21% in period 6 (the previous period was at 98.84%). The Moving Annual Average ended period 6 at 98.89%. As usual the main cause of lost miles was vehicle reliability with 42% of those lost being accounted for in that way.

Major Incidents

Monday 20th August: At 1339 the service between Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly was suspended as a passenger required medical attention after falling on a tram. Services from Eccles and MediaCityUK were diverted to Victoria and all Bury and Altrincham services ran direct across the city. Services resumed to Piccadilly at 1430.

Monday 20th August: An infrastructure failure at Irk Valley Junction led to Bury and Oldham line services being suspended. All services from Altrincham, Eccles, MediaCityUK and St Werburgh’s Road operated into Piccadilly. A full service was resumed from 1817.

Wednesday 22nd August: Services were suspended at 1022 between Bury and Whitefield due to a Police incident at Radcliffe.  Services on the Bury line were turned at Whitefield until 1255 when the Police handed the scene back to Metrolink.

Thursday 23rd August: Services to Bury again had to be turned at Whitefield from 2300 until the end of service after a fire in a plastics factory.

Wednesday 29th August: The Irk Valley Junction failed at 1137 which meant no trams could run through to Bury initially. Services on the Oldham line were then suspended from 1229. Trams resumed operation between Bury and Woodlands Road at 1344 (passengers advised to alight at Heaton Park for connections to the City via bus) before a replacement bus service was introduced between Crumpsall and Victoria at 1355. Services on the Oldham line resumed from 1351 and then finally a full service was introduced to Bury at 1556.

Wednesday 5th September: A tram failed at Sale at 1755. The Altrincham line was suspended until 1900 when the failed tram was moved to Timperley sidings.

Wednesday 5th September: “The Primark incident”. It was reported at 2000 that the overhead line equipment at Market Street outbound was sagging. The service was stopped and a response team was sent to the scene. Services from Bury and Oldham were terminated at Victoria with all other lines running into Piccadilly. It was discovered that the overhead was sagging because refurbishment works at Primark had cut the bolt inside the building that holds the lower overhead line support wire. The line was closed for the remainder of the day but repairs were completed by 0300 allowing normal services to commence from the start of the following day.

Tuesday 25th September: Services were suspended between Cornbrook and Eccles at 0811 after the overhead line was damaged at the corner of Langworthy Road South. Services resumed between Cornbrook and MediaCityUK from 0920 and then all the way through to Eccles from 1434.

Friday 28th September: A tram failed between Exchange Quay and Salford Quays at 0852. The vehicle was moved to MediaCityUK at 0948 allowing services to resume.

Friday 28th September: A tram was involved in a collision with a taxi at the junction of Mosley Street and St Peter’s Square at 0921. Services from Bury and Oldham operated into
Piccadilly with trams from Altrincham and St Werburgh’s Road terminated at Deansgate-Castlefield. The tram was allowed to return to Depot by the Police at 0938 after which normal operations could resume.

Friday 28th September: The third incident of this day saw an overhead line failure between Eccles and Broadway. Trams continued to run from Piccadilly into MediaCityUK following the incident at 1058. After repairs trams resumed through to Eccles from 1310.

Sunday 30th September: A road traffic accident between a car and a pedestrian caused the road to be closed between Langworthy and Weaste at 1400. Services ran Piccadilly-MediaCityUK until 1617 when the road was reopened.

Monday 8th October: A Police incident led to Shudehill and High Street being closed in Manchester City Centre. This meant trams from Bury and Oldham were terminated at Victoria and all other services went into Piccadilly and a replacement bus service filled in the gap. Normal services resumed at 2217 after the Police reopened the area.

Trams Out of Service

2006 was the only tram out of service during both these periods becoming the final vehicle to undergo the modification improvement project. It returned to service on 7th
September.

Complaints

The total number of complaints fell from 494 in period 4 to 385 in period 5 and then back up 2 498 in period 6. 45% of the complaints were about service disruptions. Meanwhile 27 commendations were received in these eight weeks.
