We are used to seeing Santa Specials on various heritage tramways but a much rarer event is that of a Santa Special on a normal operating tramway but for one day only this year Edinburgh Trams will be running a series of special trips with the big man himself in attendance! On Monday 3rd December three special trips will run between York Place and Gyle Centre with pre-booking required to take part.
The Gyle Santa Express is being run by Edinburgh Trams in conjunction with Gyle Shopping Centre with all proceeds from tickets going to Edinburgh Trams’ charity of the year, MS Therapy Centre Lothian.
Tickets cost £2.70 for a child with an accompanying adult and £1.70 for any extra adults. It is planned that £2 from the joint tickets and £1 from the additional adult tickets will go to the charity. The extra 70p is required to cover extra costs involved in selling the tickets via an online platform. The tickets will also allow for return travel to their starting point on any tram on the same day.
The Santa Express will run as follows:
1050 York Place to Gyle Centre
1135 Gyle Centre to St Andrew Square
1210 York Place to Gyle Centre
Tickets can be booked online.
Amy Witherspoon, Edinburgh Trams’ Assistant Marketing Manager, said: “We always want to bring the festive spirit to our network and there’s no better way to do it than by inviting Santa himself to ride with us. We’re looking forward to welcoming children on board for these very special trips which have the extra bonus of raising money for charity, as proceeds from ticket sales will go to Edinburgh Trams’ charity of the year, MS Therapy Centre Lothian.”
