Picture in Time: Manchester Metrolink 1001

We head back to Manchester for this image from the archives as Picture in Time lands just over 10 years ago in December 2007.

The tram pictured is the first second generation tram to be built for operation on the UK’s streets, T68 1001. Having been built by Firema’s Casaralta Works it was delivered to Manchester on 29th August 1991 and was the very first tram to return to the streets of Greater Manchester on 15th September 1991 when it was hauled through the city for gauging trials. It entered service on 6th April 1992 and was withdrawn from action on 7th August 2012. It departed Manchester for the last time on 15th April 2014 and was scrapped soon after at Booths in Rotherham.

In this photo we see 1001 – with small end numbers applied – departing from Piccadilly Gardens on 9th December 2007. It is operating a Piccadilly to Altrincham service.
