Metrolink driver assaulted on platform

A Manchester Metrolink driver was assaulted on the platform at Cornbrook in the early hours of Saturday 28th October in an unprovoked attack brining condemnation from Metrolink bosses. The driver was changing ends on the tram having just terminated from Manchester Airport when the attack took place. Metrolink security staff were on the scene and detained the man until police arrived.

Danny Vaughan, Head of Metrolink at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “The safety of our staff and customers is our priority and we’re shocked by the unprovoked assault on one of our drivers. This kind of behaviour is not acceptable and our drivers have the right to do their work without fear of violence. On this occasion the driver was not seriously injured. I’d like to reassure everyone that we have a team of Travel Safe Officers who patrol the Metrolink network and all our trams and stops are equipped with CCTV.”

A man was arrested on the scene on suspicion of assault and taken to a local police station for questioning.
