Manchester Airport early bird service a success

Manchester Metrolink’s early bird service to the Airport has been declared a success with 1,474 passengers taking the tram in the first month of the service. The service departs Firswood at 0300 and was introduced from 21st March to encourage early shift workers at the Airport to use public transport to get and to and from work.

Peter Cushing, TfGM Metrolink Director, is delighted at the success of the service: “I’m pleased to see that hundreds of workers have already opted to take advantage of our ‘early bird’ service. Its popularity has really taken off and I hope to welcome many more on board as news continues to spread. Manchester Airports Group and its partners operate around the clock, employing thousands of people and for those workers who live in south Manchester, Metrolink offers an accessible, fast, frequent and reliable route to work. And those from slightly further afield can still benefit from the thousands of free park and ride spaces across our network.”

The Manchester Airport line currently runs every 20 minutes between Cornbrook and the Airport until 0600 before increasing frequency to every 12 minutes (reduced frequencies run on Sundays). The service is due to be extended to Deansgate-Castlefield later this year.
