Feasibility study for Kimberley NET extension to be launched

Broxtowe Borough Council have narrowly voted in favour of launching a feasibility study into the possibility of extending Nottingham Express Transit to Kimberley. The majority of the cost of this feasibility study – which could cost up to £70,000 – will be met by the private sector and the study will seek to find out whether it is practical to construct the line before any final decision is made on whether to go-ahead with the idea.

Cllr Richard Robinson, who represents Kimberley and Cossall on Broxtowe Borough Council, said: “I am absolutely over the moon with the decision last night, seven years of hard campaigning went into that. I think it happened for two reasons. One, because we had a strong vision and two, that we were supported by the community.”

Although plans for the line have received the backing of Nottingham City Council there is currently no funding available to construct the line and the promoters of the line would have to apply to central government for the majority of the cash to build NET to Kimberley and this would likely be many years away.
