Blackpool Boat car 227 to miss Easter event

As was briefly mentioned in our summary of the planned heritage tram service operating in Blackpool over the Easter weekend, Open Boat 227 is unfortunately out of service at present, meaning that it will sadly miss out on the weekends’ events to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the English Electric streamlined fleet. Blackpool Transport have now released some more details which will hopefully reassure the many Boat car fans out there that 227‘s lay-off should not last for too long.

227 was recently transferred to Starr Gate depot for commissioning work, where it was found that it would require some more electrical attention than was expected. It was not possible to complete the required work in time for Easter, and the tram has therefore remained at the back of the modern depot complex with its trolley tied down, awaiting its turn for repairs when resources become available. The tram is not considered to be withdrawn, and so hopefully the current ‘Tram of the Year’ winner will soon be back in traffic so that we can enjoy the delights of three Boat cars in contrasting liveries running along the promenade in this milestone year for the class.

In other news, the ongoing issues with the Manchester Square traffic junction look set to continue for a few more weeks, meaning that this is likely to impact on the heritage tram operations over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. As a result it is expected that some heritage cars will be stabled at Starr Gate for longer than was initially planned, which will give some unusual sights as the trams make their way along New South Promenade, albeit not in passenger service, at the beginning and end of their duties.

What a fantastic picture! Beautifully cared for trams, within the confines of a modern depot. Cracking!
