Blackpool Tramway takes the safety message into local schools

Blackpool Transport have been continuing their campaign to remind the public about the need to be alert around the tramway, with the first of several school visits taking place. The tramway was one of the first to embrace the LRSSB backed “TWO LINES = STOP” campaign and will now be reinforcing this in local schools.

The campaign urges pedestrians (of all ages) to pay attention to their surroundings when approaching tram tracks. National research has shown that although trams are one of the safest forms of public transport, pedestrian inattention was the leading cause of accidents, which led to the nationwide campaign being launched.

Steve Staley, Tramway Operations and Safety Manager at Blackpool Transport, said: “In addition to reinforcing this important advice, a recent visit to Cardinal Allen School in Fleetwood gave us the chance to talk to Year 7 and Year 8 about all aspects of tramway and the importance of behaving sensibly when using the tram or when near the tracks.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to remind all members of the public to take extra care in areas where trams operate, and to make sure they look both ways when approaching the tracks.”

Over the next few months, staff at Blackpool Transport will be visiting other schools close to the network as part of their wider efforts to maintain the system’s excellent safety record.
