Metrolink Service Performance Update

The latest service performance statistics on the Manchester Metrolink system have been released on the TfGM Committee website – http://www.transportforgreatermanchestercommittee.gov.uk/download/4348/item_05_metrolink_service_performance.
This latest report gives details on periods 9, 10 and 11 between Monday 12th December 2011 and Sunday 4th March 2012.

Performance

The good news in these periods is that performance as measured by Operated Mileage increased from 98.87% in period 9 to 99.00% in period 11. Most miles lost during this time was put down to vehicle availability with 53% of all lost mileage due to this.

The Moving Annual Average ended period 11 at 98.94%.

 

Major Incidents

There were 10 major incidents during these periods impacting upon performance.

15th December 2011: A passenger who had fallen from the platform at St Peter’s Square at 2301 was hit by a tram and became stuck between the tram and platform edge. Tragically the main died as a result of his injuries. During the incident services ran Piccadilly-Bury and Eccles/Altrincham/South Manchester line-Deansgate-Castlefield.

19th December 2011: The signal at Cornbrook outbound defaulted to occupied resulting in all trams having to pass this at danger, resulting in service delays. The incident was first reported at 0820 and at 0905 it was reported that the bonds had been stolen causing a short circuit near the signal and damaging the track. Services on the Altrincham, Eccles and South Manchester lines were suspended until 1145 when repairs were completed.

23rd December 2011: A driver reported difficulties in proceeding through the points at Harbour City at 1248. Services were suspended on the Eccles line at 1306 whilst a Thales engineer was called to the site to affect a repair. This was completed at 1356 after which services were reformed.

31st December 2011: A vehicle failed at Shudehill at 0850 inbound. Services were able to operate Bury-Victoria and Eccles/Altrincham/South Manchester line-Piccadilly. At 0925 the failed vehicle was coupled and moved to Piccadilly which allowed normal services to resume.

10th January 2012: At 1710 drivers on two trams reported a loss of power at Deansgate-Castlefield after two circuit breakers had tripped. Following engineers inspecting the trams, both vehicles were returned to Queens Road Depot and services were able to resume at 1755.

11th January 2012: At 1707 the driver of a tram reported a loss of power at Piccadilly Gardens. This led to the suspension of service between Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly whilst technicians attended the scene. The tram was returned to Depot and services were resumed at 1739.

17th January 2012: The driver of a tram reported at 1639 that he was unable to get a  proceed at a signal at Trafford Bar. Whilst a technician investigated services ran Bury-Piccadilly and Piccadilly-Eccles. The points were successfully reset at 1720 with services
back underway at 1728.

4th February 2012: At 1347 points 3 in the City Centre failed due to compacted ice in the points. A technician was deployed from the Depot and after clearance services resumed at 1410.

4th February 2012: The driver of a M5000 reported at 1523 that he had derailed at the points at MediaCityUK. Services were only able to operate between MediaCityUK and Piccadilly whilst technicians and an incident officer attended the scene. The service resumed at 2049.

10th February 2012: A tram failed with a loss of traction at St Peter’s Square at 2240. The failed tram was returned to Depot at 2355 and normal services could resume. During the
disruption trams from Altrincham, Eccles and on the South Manchester line were turned at Deansgate-Castlefield with Bury services heading into Piccadilly.

 

Trams Out of Service

Seven trams spent time out of service during these three periods.

1007: Entered the Special Project Programme on 21st December 2011. Returned to service on 17th January 2012.

1012: Entered the Special Project Programme in mid-January. Returned to service on 23rd
February 2012.

1013: Entered the Special Project Programme on 24th February. Due back into service in April.

1016: Entered the Special Project Programme in mid-November. Returned to service on
30th December 2011.

1017: Entered the Special Project Programme on 19th January 2012. Returned to service 3rd March 2012.

3007: Out of service from 11th-22nd November 2011 to be fitted with Automatic Tram Stop equipment.

3011: Required a new bogie to be fitted on 4th February.

 

Complaints

331 complaints were received in period 8, 1415 in period 10 and 402 in period 11. As would be expected most complaints received (67% in total) were due to service disruptions. In the same period 30 commendations have been received.
