Numbers 6 – Manx Electric Railway 6

On we go with the series “Numbers”.

For the first time in this series we feature the Manx Electric Railway as we take a look at Tunnel Car 6. This was originally one of six Tunnel Cars built by G.F.Mlnes in Birkenhead in 1894 (although only four survive today with two examples being destroyed in the Laxey Car Shed fire of 1930) and has continued to operate on the MER between Douglas and Ramsey ever since. There have been periods where its been out of use for works attention (including as we write) but apart from that it has been regularly used. 6 last ran in 2024 but should be back in 2026 once its overhaul is completed. This image features 6 working with trailer 41 as it crosses the A2 on the approach to Laxey Station on 5th August 2016. (Photograph by Gareth Prior, 5th August 2016)
