Proposals to reduce Supertram fares

It could cost less to travel on South Yorkshire Supertram from 1st January 2026 if proposals being discussed by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) are given the go-ahead.

As part of Mayor of South Yorkshire, Oliver Coppard’s strategy he is recommending that all fares would be frozen for the trams with the exception of the adult long-distance single Supertram fare which would be reduced from £3.40 to £3.

Commenting on the plans Oliver Coppard said: “Last year we brought the Supertram network back under public control. We’ve made a good start, with millions invested in improving the track, the lines and the network, dogs now allowed on trams, and a new stop is coming on line at Magna in early 2026.

“But I know fares keep on going up. So, from January 1 next year, for the following year, I’m asking the MCA Board to agree a fare freeze for most trips, with longer distance adult trips reduced from £3.40 to a flat £3, bringing the cost in line with the cap on bus fares.

“In the longer term I want fares to be better integrated with the bus network, and if we can, even cheaper, particularly for young people.

“Public control of Supertram means these sorts of decisions are now ours to make, so we can put the needs of the public back at the heart of our public transport network. For now, these fare changes are another small step on that journey.”

The decision on fares for the year ahead is set to be made at a SYMCA board meeting on 11th November 2025.
