Another closure coming for a section of the Tyne and Wear Metro

There will be no Tyne and Wear Metro service between Regent Centre and Airport for five days at the end of November with rail replacement works set to take place from Wednesday 26th and Sunday 30th November 2025.

During the closure the rails and other associated equipment will be replaced at Ponteland Road Metro bridge at Bank Foot.

This is the latest part of multi million pounds worth of investment in the Metro (thanks to significant funding from the UK government) which has seen much of the infrastructure renewed, as well as the Metro Flow project which has dualled a section of track in South Tyneside, as well as a fleet of new state of art trains.

Paul Welford, Major Projects Director at Nexus, said: “This is essential investment in new track and associated equipment to ensure that Metro continues to reliably serve our Airport line for many years to come.  This work can only be carried out safely during a five-day closure period. The track at Ponteland Road bridge carries hundreds of Metro services every day and needs  renewals work

“There is no good time to close a section of line, but we need to carry out this project to ensure that this vital section of the Metro system is future proofed and reliable for the long term and therefore minimise disruption to customers.

“A frequent replacement bus service will run in the affected area so that customers can still travel around on public transport. The buses will get everyone to where they need to be on the Metro network during the closure.”

Replacement bus no. 901 will run between Regent Centre Interchange and Newcastle International Airport calling at or near all Metro stops on the route.

During the works Bank Foot car park will be closed to allow for a compound to be created. Bank Foot level crossing will also be closed to vehicles and pedestrians throughout the planned work period.
