In Pictures: Works underway at Infirmary Road, Sheffield

One of three tramways in the UK which is currently seeing engineering work take place is South Yorkshire Supertram. This phase of work is seeing rail being replaced at Infirmary Road leading to no trams running beyond Shalesmoor to either Malin Bridge or Middlewood. In this pictorial article we take a look at the first couple of days of work as well as some of the unusual tram movements at Shalesmoor. Photography from Stuart Cooke.

The work on Infimary Road is taking place between Sunday 26th and Friday 31st October 2025.

During this period trams run:

  • BLUE – Halfway to Shalesmoor
  • YELLOW – Meadowhall to Cathedral (after 2000 and on the Sunday trams ran Meadowhall to Shalesmoor)
  • PURPLE and TRAM-TRAIN – running as normal

Replacement buses run:

  • BL1 – Shalesmoor to Malin Bridge
  • YE1 – Castle Square to Middlewood (after 2000 and on the Sunday this only runs Shalesmoor to Middlewood)

On the first day of the closure work was taking place to remove the old track. This is just to the Shalesmoor side Infirmary Road tramstop.

Another day one image as work takes place to remove the old track.

Onto the second day and a bit further along, actually at the Infirmary Road stop, and new track is being readied for installation.

Here we see the scene back outside the Palm Court Apartments with old and new rails in situ.

At Shalesmoor with 119 using the crossover. This was the Sunday when all Yellow route trams ran to Shalesmoor, for the rest of the week they would only do so after 2000.
