Early market engagement launched for new Supertram trams

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) have started the process of procuring a new fleet of trams with the publication of an “Early Market Engagement”.

The purpose of the “Early Market Engagement” is to allow any interested organisations with appropriate experience to outline their views and ideas about the replacement and supply of the original fleet of trams which have operated in Sheffield since the first line opened in 1994.

This is very much the first stage of plans for the replacement of the trams and it will be some time before the first tram touches the Supertram network and is carrying passengers.

In the document it states that the total estimated value of the procurement would be £139.2 million (including VAT) and that the contract date would be between July 2027 and January 2031.

The deadline for any companies to engage with the authority is 27th October 2025 and SYMCA expect to publish an official tender notice on or around 19th December 2025.
