Stop by Stop Edinburgh Trams: Bankhead to Airport – Edinburgh Gateway

As “Stop by Stop” continues our journey on the Edinburgh Trams system we reach Edinburgh Gateway., which is the only new stop to have opened on the original line since that started operation.

The tram we are on will depart Gyle Centre and we will soon be going into a tunnel as we go underneath the A8 Glasgow Road. There is then a sharp turn to the right which is where we come to the Edinburgh Gateway stop which provides interchange with the railway station of the same name. You can catch trains to places like Dundee, Perth and Leven (as well as Edinburgh of course) from this station. Those of you who only visited Edinburgh in the first few years of the tramway will not have seen this stop as it was only opened on 11th December 2016, two days after the railway station. The whole idea of the railway/tram interchange was to provide between interchange for those travelling to the airport.

The stop here is probably a grander affair than most others on the network with it featuring a roof over both platforms as well as the tracks. This stop is also used for crew changes with direct access to Gogar tram depot and just before we reach the stop there is an access track for trams to get to and from the depot. The stop may be of a different design to others on the network but it sill has ticket machines, validators, seating and passenger information for all.

We look down to Edinburgh Gateway tramstop as we see 277 just departing bound for Newhaven. In the foreground is the access track to the depot whilst beyond the platforms is the actual depot just visible. The platforms can be seen with 275 at the Airport bound one whilst we can also see the overall roof. The black building on the right is the access to the railway station.

We also see 251 as it departs from Edinburgh Gateway. Its another tram bound for Newhaven and is just pulling away from the platform and out of the cover of the roof. It will soon start the sharp bend as it continues its journey. (Both Photographs by Gareth Prior, 28th June 2025)
