Around the World in Trams: Rhein-Neckar 311

Its Germany again for our next stop in “Around the World in Trams” as we feature a selection of photos taken in the Rhein-Neckar, based at Mannheim.

Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH are the company who run public transport in the Rhine-Neckar region of Germany. There are a number of different areas that they run services for and that includes the trams and buses in Mannheim under MVV Transport. The Mannheim tramway is metre-gauge and has been operational since 1878, with electric trams coming from 1900. Its current route length is around 60 miles in length.

The photos we’ll feature over the next few weeks were taken during 2003, and several of those we will see have since been replaced and gone on to pastures new. That includes the tram featured below – 311. Built in 1962 this Duewag B4 originally ran in Bielefeld when it was numbered 413 and then 793. It remained there until 1982 when it moved to Mannheim and was renumbered 311. It ended its career in Arad, Romania but was scrapped in 2018.
