West Midlands Metro works ahead of the return to trams to St George’s

Trams look set to return to Wolverhampton St George’s again in the “coming weeks” and in preparation there are to be engineering works on the West Midlands Metro network for the last three days of August 2025.

Trams last ran to Wolverhampton St George’s on 28th August 2023 when they stopped (temporarily) ahead of the opening of the extension to Wolverhampton Railway Station. At the time it was announced as being temporary to allow for “integration works and updates to the stop environment” and posters put up at stops across the network were expecting it to be reopened by the autumn of 2023.

But Autumn 2023 came and went, then the whole of 2024 did the same and we have reached two years later and there has still been no tram running to the original Wolverhampton terminus.

However, that looks set to change soon as work at the junction of Piper’s Row in Wolverhampton has been announced. This is where the two Wolverhampton routes split and in the information about the work to take place West Midlands Metro state “as we prepare to open our Wolverhampton St George’s stop in the coming weeks”. Just when this may be hasn’t been mentioned but at least it is a positive sign towards its return.

The work will include the upgrading of signalling equipment and will take place from the start of service on Friday 29th August until the end of service on Sunday 31st August.

During this period trams will run as follows:

  • Up to every 8 minutes between The Royal and Edgbaston Village only
  • No trams will run from The Royal to Wolverhampton Station

Metro tickets will be accepted on National Express bus service 79 between Wolverhampton Bus Station (Stand S) and The Royal.

Normal services resume to Wolverhampton Station as from Monday 1st September 2025.

Could it be a St George’s to Millenium Point Service (only speculating) perhaps? Does anyone know the pattern of service planned on the Millenium Point branch, please, and will both sides of the triangle have a passenger service?
