Trams will be running at a reduced frequency on Nottingham Express Transit for the next four weeks in an attempt to be able to provide a more reliable service following a recent spate of cancellations as a result of a tram shortage.
For those who use NET regularly, or even just follow them on social media, it won’t have escaped your notice that a number of services have had to be cancelled over the past few weeks and its hoped that by temporarily introducing a new timetable from Wednesday 25th June there will be more of a guarantee of trams turning up as planned.
In a statement NET have said that there has recently been an increase in both road traffic collisions and vandalism which has led to trams needing extensive repairs. Most notable of these is 228 which was hit and derailed by a car on 2nd June 2025 at Queen’s Walk. In addition 232 is believed to still be at Derby undergoing repairs (where its been for over a year now having gone on 20th May 2024) after its Bulwell derailment on 12th June 2023.
In a FAQ section on their website when questioned about why so many trams need repairs NET said: “Unfortunately, we’ve suffered extensive damage to some of our trams following recent road traffic collisions. Whilst we do have engineers hard at work in our depot, some of the damage is extensive and requires replacement parts that need to be sourced or, in some cases, the tram needs to have specialist repair work, which has to be completed off-site. We also need to ensure the rest of the fleet is regularly checked, serviced and maintained to ensure we continue to operate a safe and reliable service.”
From Wednesday 25th June a revised service will operate Monday to Saturday (Sundays will remain as published). This will see trams running on both routes every 15 minutes between 0600 and 0700, and from 2100-0000, and every 10 minutes 0700-2100. The usual peak time (0700-1000 and 1500-1900 Monday-Friday, 1000-1900 Saturday) 7 minute frequency will not run.
This service will only require 26 (out of a total fleet size of 37) to operate it so they are confident this reduced frequency will easily be able to be maintained. It is hoped that a normal service will be able to resume from Monday 21st July, although if repairs are completed ahead of schedule they may bring this date forward.
232 has been delivered back to Nottingham in the past couple of days and 207 has been taken to Derby for its repairs to get underway.
Cheers Andy
