South Yorkshire Supertram celebrate a year of Rail Safe Friendly Initiative

South Yorkshire Supertram has announced that they’ve reached over 6,400 young people during the first year of being part of the Rail Safe Friendly Initiative (delivered by Learn Live) – the UK’s first light rail operator to have joined this.

The ground-breaking partnership was launched as a one-year programme and targeted 10 schools across Sheffield, focusing on delivering vital travel safety messages to children. Through engaging, age-appropriate videos for both primary and secondary pupils, the initiative has reinforced crucial safety guidance and promoted a culture of awareness around trams and tramways.

10 local schools – all selected for their proximity to the tram network – have been involved in the project with expert resources and support provided. A highlight was a specially produced educational video featuring a Supertram conductor, who offered practical advice on staying safe around trams.

Over the course of 12 months, the programme has reached 6,421 young people and generated an impressive £181,585.88 in social value.

Supertram is also further promoting tram safety by signing up to the LRSSB national “Two Lines = Stop” campaign.

Wayne Clay, Head of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality at Supertram, said: “These collaborations demonstrate Supertram’s ongoing commitment to the wellbeing of our passengers and the wider community. We look forward to our continued partnership with Learn Live and LRSSB, and hope it paves the way for a more informed, safety-conscious generation.”
