We have another edition of “Picture in Time” today as we’re back to Blackpool again.
Jubilee 761 is seen in this photo having not long arrived at Tower and terminating with what is presumably a special during the busy autumn illuminations season. The traditional concrete fencing on the right and the long-standing Tower overbridge add to the scene as the crew of the tram are deep in conversation by the driver’s position.
761 – the first of the two Jubilee Cars – was converted from Balloon 725 in 1979 and this was the tram still in its original style carrying the standard green and cream fleet livery of the time. Its also carrying adverts for The Rockin Berries Fun Show which was the main show on South Pier during 1983 and also featured special guest star Bernie Clifton. The Rockin Berries still exist as a group to this day, although the members have changed over the years. 761 is now stored at Rigby Road Depot and is part of the FTT collection.
Although the current orange livery is quite striking, it woud be wonderful to see this tram restored to its original appearance, should funds become available. Then, by extension, it would demonstrate another interesting variation on the Balloon class for display at Tramtown.
Anyone who has seen the horror of the livery on 762, currently at Crich, would certainly agree. Apparently, kids rather like it, however.
