Dudley’s Very Light Rail Innovation Centre (VLRIC) is set to open its doors for the first time to the public on Saturday 17th May 2025. The Family Fun Day is billed as part of the national Railway 200 celebrations and will also have plenty to keep the enthusiast interested – including a chance to see old friend Midland Metro T69 16, now in use as a test bed for new technology.
16 has been located at the VLRIC since 24th November 2023 with it moved there from Long Marston where it had been stored for just over four years. It has a distinct – and useful – purpose in its new life and that is to provide a tram which can be used to test various new technologies.
To anyone passing the VLRIC no. 16 has been visible for the past few months with it stored outside but 17th May 2025 will be the first chance for the public to get up close to the tram once again since it was withdrawn from service back on 14th August 2015. The tram will be open and former driver’s will also be there to discuss the past and the future of the vehicle.
The day will also provide the opportunity to ride on the Coventry Very Light Rail vehicle (before it heads to Coventry for the demonstration tests at the end of May) and the simulator being used to train drivers for that demonstration will also be available for visitors to have a go.
The event – which is in aid of charity – will be opened by Pete Waterman OBE and as well as the above there will be lots of activities for all of the family. This will include fairground rides, model railways, face painting, creative crafts, children’s entertainment and shows, along with food.
Tickets are available for purchase now (£10 for adults, £5 for children aged 5-15 with family tickets also available).
