Taking place between 25th and 27th March 2025, the UTIP Joint Bus and Light Rail Committee met in Turin, Italy as they explored integrated solutions for the future of public transport. UKTram were represented at the meeting by Phillip Terry, Lead Engineer, as best practice examples and case studies from across Europe were showcased.
A key message which came out of the session was that when bus and light rail schemes are developed in tandem they provide ideal integrated and sustainable transport solutions for cities. Breakout discussions focused on charging and grid infrastructure for both modes and traffic signal prioritisation. These sessions generated enthusiastic debate, with delegates sharing insights on innovation and implementation across diverse urban networks.
There was a visit to the Gruppo Torinese Transport (GTT) Venaria depot which allowed them to see how it has been adapted for charging electric buses and tram storage. This included a preview of the latest Hitachi trams which are part of the fleet.
On the second day of the event, attendees travelled via the historic GTT Sassi-Superga Rack Railway to the meeting venue. This session saw updates from ongoing light rail workstreams and a review and any learnings from the previous day’s breakout sessions and discussions.
The event then concluded with a technical tour of the IVECO electric drive and battery manufacturing facility allowing an insight into developments in battery-powered transport solutions.
