Picture in Time: Blackpool Railcoach 678

“Picture in Time” return to Blackpool for the next few weeks with another set of images. And we carry on with some more wintry images taken in January 1979 to start with from the camera of Donald Brooks.

We are in Fleetwood for this image and the snow isn’t falling anymore but the roads are now slushy and wet. The pavements, though, have started to clear and pedestrian are re-emerging. It may not be the most imaginative of names but that doesn’t stop The Cafeteria being popular, doubtless for hot drinks to warm up on a cold winters day.

The photo features Ex-Towing Railcoach 678 which makes its way across the traffic island to head north along Lord Street on its way to the Fleetwood Ferry terminus as a right-turning motor car waits for it to clear the carriageway.

678 is in the plain half green, half cream livery and features Corporation crests as well as a trolley. The plain and simple FLEETWOOD destination blind is of the era as well. 678 was scrapped in June 2023 having been part of the Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust collection at Wyre Dock.
