Supertram disruption continues

As we reported last night, there are currently no trams operating beyond Cathedral to either Malin Bridge and Middlewood following the identification of a track fault at West Street. It has now been confirmed that this disruption is likely to continue all weekend with the plan being normal services will be able to resume from the start of services on Monday 13th January 2025.

In the latest update, South Yorkshire Supertram have also confirmed that the cause of the problems is a broken rail, which the blame put on the recent sub-zero temperatures. Repair work got underway on Friday 10th January but as the break is complex its expected to take three to four days to complete the work.

Until the repairs are completed trams are running as follows:

  • Blue – Halfway to Cathedral
  • Yellow – Meadowhall to Cathedral
  • Purple – Herdings Park to Cathedral (normal service)
  • Tram-Train – Rotherham Parkgate to Cathedral (normal service)

Anyone who wants to get beyond Cathedral will then be able to use a mixture of First service buses and, as from 1900 on Friday 10th January, a replacement bus service from Hillsborough to Middlewood:

  • Services 8 and 8a: Between Sheffield City Centre and Leppings Lane
  • Services 18 and 18a: Between Hillsborough Interchange and Leppings Lane
  • Service 52a: Between Sheffield City Centre, University of Sheffield and Hillsborough
  • Services 81 and 82: Between Sheffield City Centre, Hillsborough and Malin Bridge
  • Replacement bus YE1: Between Hillsborough Interchange, Hillsborough Park, Leppings Lane and Middlewood – every 15 minutes as from 1900 on Friday 10th January

South Yorkshire Supertram have expressed their thanks to First Bus for being able to provide the resources for the replacement service at short notice.

  1. Andy says:

There is now a second “track fault” which is preventing operations between the city centre and Gleadless Town End. Apparently trams are still running between Halfway and Gleadless Town End Though. The fault is thought to be somewhere in the area of Norfolk Park.
