Manchester Metrolink Then & Now: Manchester Central

We have another edition of “Manchester Metrolink Then & Now” for you.

The location of our two photos this time around is adjacent to Manchester Central – now a conference and events centre but originally a railway station. Trams now pass this way when running between St Peter’s Square and Deansgate-Castlefield.

Over the past few weeks this series has featured a lot of buses and its no different this week as passing the derelict Manchester Central station is Leyland Titan PD2 3706 which was working on route 186. This was one of the last rear entrance buses in service and has now been preserved. Central station certainly looks a little bit sorry for itself.

Onto 5th March 2024 and things look a lot tidier here now! Trams now run on a viaduct as they rise from street level to the level of Deansgate-Castlefield and the former rail corridor. Manchester Central – as the conference centre is now know again – looks in much better condition as well. (Both Photographs by Keith Chadbourne)
