Picture in Time: Docklands Light Railway Poplar Depot

We head to London’s Docklands Light Railway for one final time in this latest batch of photos in “Picture in Time”.

This is 21st June 2005 and we are at Poplar looking across from the station towards the depot. We can see the start of the change in livery with 24 over the far side in the newer design (including the “river”) whilst closer to us we see 60, 65 and an unidentified unit in the older livery style. All these units will ultimately be withdrawn and scrapped upon the introduction into service of the new CAF Ineo trains in the next few years.

Poplar Depot was the original depot for the DLR, opening in August 1987 along with the first sections of the network. The site was unable to be expanded so as the network continued to grow a new depot was built out at Beckton (1994) and this subsequently became the main depot for the network.
