Manchester Metrolink Then & Now: Newton Heath & Moston

In this latest edition of “Manchester Metrolink Then & Now” we move onto the Oldham & Rochdale line.

Whilst most stops across the Metrolink network have two platforms, the one we look at in the below images is one of those which just has one with the tramway here just being single track. Newton Heath and Moston is on the Oldham & Rochdale line and is between the stops at Central Park and Failsworth. There is just a single line for Metrolink here as there is an adjacent railway line which connects with a freight only line into a terminal there.

There used to be a railway station known as Dean Street in this vicinity but the tramstop was to take a different name. This view on 12th December 2010 looks during towards the location of the stop with initial construction works underway. The track on the left is the previously mentioned freight line.

Moving on to 15th March 2024 and its almost 12 years since this section of Metrolink opened (the stop was first served on 13th June 2012). The single platform is on the right and the freight line is still in situ on the left. (Both Photographs by Keith Chadbourne)
