Heritage Award for iconic Hanson’s Ale bridge on Metro extension

The iconic Hanson’s Ale bridge in Tipton, which was one of the final major structures to be installed on the Wednesbury to Dudley section of the Brierley Hill extension on West Midlands Metro, has won a prestigious heritage award. Midland Metro Alliance and design partner, Tony Gee, have been recognised for their collaborative design and delivery of the installation for the structure at the Institution of Civil Engineers West Midland awards.

The Hanson’s Ale bridge has long been a local landmark and whilst it needed replacing as part of the upgrade of the former railway line to the required standards for the Metro extension it was decided to replicate the former structure as part of the work. It was lowered into place across Birmingham New Road earlier this year.

The ICE West Midlands judges were impressed by the bridge’s homage to the previous structure. They went above and beyond to ensure the new bridge retained its iconic green and gold colour scheme.

David Lea, Associate Director at Tony Gee and Partners, said: “This award is a testament to the successful collaboration between Tony Gee and the Midland Metro Alliance. We are thrilled to have contributed to the preservation of this cherished local landmark, ensuring it continues to serve the community for generations to come.”

This is the second year in succession that the partners have been recognised in the Heritage category at the ICE awards. In 2023 they were rewarded with a high commendation for the restoration of Parkhead Viaduct in Dudley.

Tom Maplethorpe, Midland Metro Alliance Project Director, said: ““It is truly gratifying to see the Hanson’s Ale bridge acknowledged by such a respected institution with this award. Not without its challenges, from concept design through to delivery, the teams’ efforts have prioritized the preservation of this local icon – a shining example of the MMA’s dedication to leaving a positive legacy.”

And the Midland Metro Alliance will hope this isn’t the last time they are celebrating an award win this year either as they are a nominee in two categories at the Global Light Rail Awards in October. They are up for Vision of the Year in recognition of their heritage based approach and for the Outstanding Engineering Initiative of the Year for the installation of the delta junction at Wednesbury.
