Edinburgh Trams Engineering Works: October & November 2023

Early morning and late evening services on Edinburgh Trams are set to be disrupted from late October to mid November to allow for essential engineering works to take place. Work will be undertaken on the points at West End and York Place and the chance will also be taken to for there to be maintenance checks to the overhead line equipment on the new Newhaven extension.

The work will start from 1900 on Friday 27th October and will continue until 0700 on Sunday 12th November. It will only be taking place between 1900 and 0700 each night with a normal service able to run across the whole network outside of these times. During the period of the work taking place trams will only run from Edinburgh Airport to Haymarket with no trams beyond Haymarket to Newhaven.

Ticket acceptance is in place on the following Lothian Buses services at these times:

  • 3, 4, 33 and 44 from Haymarket (Dairy Road) – West End – Princes Street
  • 25 from Haymarket (Dairy Road) – West End – Princes Street – Leith Walk – Foot of the Walk
  • 16 from Princes Street – Picardy Place – Leith Walk – The Shore – Newhaven

Tram tickets will not be accepted on any other bus services.

Andy Conway, Edinburgh Trams Head of Engineering, said: “As part of our scheduled maintenance programme we will be changing tracks and points on two key sections of the line for the first time since the start of operations in 2014. This will ensure the safety and reliability of future tram services. “We will also use this works period to conduct a full maintenance check on some parts of the vital operating equipment on the new section of our network to Newhaven.

“Works have been timed to conclude ahead of what is expected to be a busy Christmas period and our Customer Experience team will be available on X (Twitter), at help points and via the live chat, to offer travel advice.”
