Nexus are investing £579,000 in a major refurbishment programme of Cullercoats Tyne and Wear Station. Work is now underway on the project which is mainly focused on the restoration of the Victorian era footbridge.
The footbridge is to see its steelwork strengthened and the outer wooden panels replaced to provide a fresher appearance and an improved customer experience. The project will also see a deep clean and repairs to the station’s canopy.
Sarah McManus, Head of Renewals at Nexus, said: “We are investing more than half a million pounds on the refurbishment of Cullercoats Metro station to improve the overall customer experience there. This station, which is a key gateway into North Tyneside and it’s amazing coastline, dates back to the Victorian era and has been part of the Metro system since it first opened.
“The footbridge is in particular need of a makeover and it’s a big part of the overall project, which will result in a cleaner and brighter station for our customers. This project forms part of our infrastructure modernisation programme, which is ensuring that Metro will be here for many generations to come.
“I’m pleased to say that the station will remain open throughout the works, so customers will be able to get Metro trains to and from there. However, the footbridge itself will be closed and a short diversionary walking route in place for customers who need to cross between the platforms. I apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”
The footbridge at the station will be closed between 23rd August and January 2024. An alternative walking route will be signposted with the faster way to get between the two platforms being via St George’s Road, Marden Avenue and Marden Terrace.
Cullercoats Station was originally opened by the North Eastern Railway in 1882 and converted for use by the Metro from August 1980.
