Stop by Stop Edinburgh Trams: Newhaven extension – Ocean Terminal

We continue our journey along the Edinburgh Trams extension to Newhaven as we go “Stop by Stop”.

After we depart from Newhaven (depending on which platform you’re at you may use the crossover to gain the right track) the tramway initially travels on a short section of reserved section of track before it starts to share the road with other vehicles. It goes along Melrose Drive (views of the Royal Yacht Britannia can just be seen if looking left just after the Cruise Terminal) before a sharp turn left onto Ocean Drive. With the Ocean Terminal shopping centre dominating the scene to the left we soon come to the first intermediate stop on the extension – Ocean Terminal.

This is an island platform with track either side. It includes everything you could possibly want from a tramstop – ticket machines and validator, shelters, seating, passenger information displays, information panels, lighting and CCTV. Some trams will be turned short here if there is any late running and a crossover is provided to the city side of the stop.

In this photo we see 256 (carrying one of the general C R Smith adverts) just departing from Ocean Terminal on the way to Airport having started its journey a few minutes earlier at Newhaven.

255 approaches Ocean Terminal with a service to Newhaven. Ocean Terminal shopping centre to the left. The crossover mentioned in the text above is about to be passed by the tram. (Both Photographs by Gareth Prior, 2nd July 2023)
