Picture in Time: Blackpool Balloon 700 & OMO 5

Before “Picture in Time” moves on again we have one more photo from September 1984 today.

We’re again at Pleasure Beach for this image with the original Balloon Car, 700, just terminating with what looks like it’s a special. The tram will now move onto the loop before it embarks on its new journey. 700 is still in the 1970s version of green and cream and includes adverts for CIS insurance between decks. Its trolley fiited (a panto wouldn’t appear for another eight years) and has single destination apertures (these came as early as 1966).

Following the tram is OMO 5 – which we saw solo a couple of weeks ago in this series. This will be running down to Starr Gate on a timetabled service.

A couple of other items of note in this photo too. The disconnected siding on the left hand side and the unloading stop on the mainline for northbound trams. The shelter for loading can be seen opposite the OMO car.
