New bridge set to be installed leading to road closure on WMM Brierley Hill extension

A new purpose build bridge over Sedgley Road on the West Midlands Metro extension which will ultimately reach Brierley Hill but is currently only funded as far as Dudley is set to be installed later this month. In order for the work to take place safely a short section of Sedgley Road East in Tipton will be closed to all vehicles from Monday 24th October.

Midland Metro Alliance – constructing the extension on behalf of Transport for West Midlands – has worked closely with Sandwell Council and Transport for West Midlands to let residents, businesses and organisations directly impacted by the localised closure know how they can avoid disruption by using travel planning information.

Tom Maplethorpe, Project Director at the Midland Metro Alliance, said: “The works to install the new bridge follow activity in the summer of 2020 to remove the old structure over Sedgley Road along with subsequent offline works to facilitate the new structure. We’re pleased that those living close by will be able to witness this exciting step forward in this project as one of the final new structures for phase one of this route is installed.”

People are being advised to plan ahead and leave more time for their journeys especially if travelling along Sedgley Road East, Park Lane West, Mayfair Gardens or Victoria Road. Road users are also being encouraged to take up other transport modes such as walking or cycling where possible.

The first phase of this extension is due to open in 2024 and will link Wednesbury with Dudley, adding nine new stops to the network. The remainder of the route to Brierley Hill is still planned to follow at a later date but remains unfunded at the present time.
