Heritage Open Day tours of old Darwen Tram Depot

There is the chance to see the old Darwen Tram Depot up close during this September’s Heritage Open Day event with the current owners of the building throwing open the doors for twice daily yours for a week between 12th and 16th September.

As previously featured in our Still Standing! Series, Darwen’s former tram depot on Lorne Street was used to house steam and electric trams between 1881 and 1946. Built as a six track depot it ended its operating career with eight tracks. It is now owned by Ritherdon and Co., who are involved in the manufacturing of a variety of electrical enclosures and related products.

The tours will not only look at the history of the company but will also provide details of trams in Darwen – the building still includes some of the old tracks too!

There will be two tours per day between 12th and 16th September – at 1100 and 1400 with each tour lasting an hour. Admission is free but pre-booking is essential. More details on Facebook.

This is well worth a visit. I did the tour last year and the company is very hospitable.
