Metrolink Service Performance Update

The latest statistics on how Manchester Metrolink has been performing recently have now been released on the TfGM Committee website. These statistics give details on the performance of the service, any major incidents, trams out of service and the number of complaints which have been received during periods 12 and 13 (Monday 4 March to Sunday 28 April 2013) and a summary of this is provided below.

Performance

Performance as measured by Operated Mileage increased during these periods having finished at 98.86% in period 11. In period 12 it was at 99.06% and then in period 13 it was 99.11%. The Moving Annual Average ended at 99.08%. Most miles lost in these periods was down to vehicle reliability (19%), driver incident contributing (18%) and signaling faults (13%).

Major Incidents

These are incident which caused delays of more than 30 minutes and impacted on performance.

4 March 2013: Points failed on the single line section at Newton Heath and Moston due to a faulty relay causing the suspension of the Rochdale line. The fault was reported at 1535 and five minutes later the points were clipped and scotched to allow movement of trams allowing trams to resume but with delays. The junction was reset at 1710 allowing normal services to resume.

8 March 2013: Services to Bury were suspended due to a medical emergency on a tram at Prestwich. Services were suspended between 1710 and 1743.

9 March 2013: A signal on the single line section at Newbold failed at 1305 causing a service suspension between Rochdale and Oldham Mumps. Services resumed at 1440 once the points were able to be manually operated.

11 March 2013: A fault was reported on the overhead line north of Freehold at 0610 causing the suspension of services between Monsall and Rochdale. The overhead was not repaired until 1332 when trams were able to resume normal operations.

14 March 2013: Due to a points failure at Bury services had to be turned at Whitefield between 0624 and 0704.

15 March 2013: Services were suspended on the Rochdale line after a car drove onto the tracks at Oldham Mumps at 2032. The car was removed at 2112.

16 March 2013: Bury services were terminated at Whitefield due to the failure of the barriers at Hagside between 1530 and 1700.

20 March 2013: A double tram failed with loss of traction of Deansgate-Castlefield ramp at 2044. The trams started to move towards Millgate sidings at 2054 but suffered failures on its return at Lower Mosley Street and points 5 in the city centre before finally being removed from the operational system at 2133. Delays were suffered to the Altrincham, Eccles and South Manchester service.

3 April 2013: A points failure at Irk Valley Junction at 1458 saw services between Victoria and Bury and Victoria and Rochdale suspended. Services resumed at 1518 with manual operation of the points but with delays. The points were fully fixed at 1723 and services resumed normal running.

6 April 2013: The Irk Valley points failed again with the Rochdale line suspended from 0531. The junction was handed back to operations at 0730 and the 12 minute services was reformed to Rochdale at 0900.

15 April 2013: A double unit failed at Queen’s Road staff halt at 1350 resulting in all services to Bury being suspended. The trams were moved back into the depot at 1427 allowing services to resume.

24 April 2013: Circuit breakers between Radcliffe and Prestwich tripped at 1930 rendering a section of the inbound line dead and leading to the suspension of services on the Bury line. The pantographs were lowered at 2000 allowing the circuit breakers to be closed and as a result services resumed at 2010.

27 April 2013: A tram failed at Shaw & Crompton at 0630 causing services to be suspended between Oldham Mumps and Rochdale. The failed tram was coupled and started to move at 0755 but the pair then failed again at Monsall for 9 minutes between 0845 and 0854.

27 April 2013: A tram was involved in a collision with a taxi on Mosley Street at 1705. A number of services had to be turned at Victoria and Deansgate-Castlefield before the tram could be moved at 1736.

Trams Out of Service

3013 remains out of service following a collision at Weaste on 6 February and has been returned to Vienna for repairs.

3025 was out of service throughout period 12 due to a bogie defect which is being investigated by Voith.

Complaints

2300 complaints were received in period 12 and 750 in period 13. 70% of all complaints received were due to service disruption.

11 commendations were received including 5 for drivers, 3 for passenger service representatives, 2 for customer services team and 1 for SOLO cleaning contractors.

Patronage

Patronage including estimated concessions in May was 2.4 million – 32,000 above budget and 377,000 ahead of May 2012. The Oldham and Rochdale line contributed 177,000 to year on year growth, the East Manchester line 43,000 and the South Manchester line 41,000.
