Out and About: Tyne and Wear Metro at Sunderland

The Tyne and Wear Metro to South Hylton via Sunderland recently celebrated its 20th anniversary and in this edition of “Out and About” we head to the rather dark Sunderland station for some views of the Metrocars in operation.

Sharing the line with services on the national rail network the Metrocars run between South Hylton and Newcastle Airport. This view shows 4038 at the rear of a double unit as it heads to South Hylton.

4081 approaches Sunderland with a service for the Airport. With buildings located above the platforms Sunderland Station has a bit of dismal feel to it.

4009 comes into the station with a service to South Hylton.

This time we see 4018 which is at the head of a service to the Airport.

The front doors of 4018 are seen in close-up showing the level boarding on offer – the new trains will improve this even further with folding steps being provided. (All Photographs by Ken Jones, 20th April 2022)
