Works move on for Trams to Newhaven project

As we enter 2022 there is expected to a be a lot more construction work taking place in Edinburgh in conjunction with the Trams to Newhaven project. This year should see the majority of construction works completed ahead of the line being handed over for testing and then eventual operation in the first half of 2023. But before we reach that milestone the first month of the year will see a couple of new worksites established.

The first of these is in the section from Coatfield Lane to Queen Charlotte Street which will see works commencing from 24th January with site establishment taking place on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd January.

At the start of these works ground excavation will take place to allow for the clearance and diversion of any utility services and for any necessary archaeological works to commence. Once this is done by Morrison Utility Services, Sacyr, Farrans, Neopul will move to conduct the tram infrastructure, hard landscaping and associated public realm works.

This section of work is due to be completed by Autumn 2022.

The worksite at the very start of the extension will also be expanded as from Monday 10th January. Whilst York Place tramstop will remain open for this phase of works (the second of three phases in the London Road to York Place section) the worksite will be extended up to York Place from Picardy Place with additional traffic diversions being introduced as a result. This work is due to be completed by the Spring, after which the works will again extend and York Place stop will be closed with services from the Airport having to terminate at St Andrew Square instead.
