In Pictures: Sheffield tram bodies at Sandtoft

Sandtoft is best know as being the home of the Trolleybus Museum with a large collection of trolleybuses which are operated around the museum site on trolley days. But its also the home of two grounded tram bodies from Sheffield which are in use for displays and general information, although their origins are still clear to see. David Mee visited the museum on 14th August 2021.

The first of the two tram bodies is 419 which as we see in these three photos has been painted all over green and is now in use as an information centre. Retaining its side destination blinds the tram was once a four wheel double decker which had been constructed in 1920. As with so many tram finds only the lower deck now survives.

Also at the museum is 442 which is used to display small exhibits at the museum. Painted brown and white this tram is also part of the 1920 batch of four wheeled double deckers used in Sheffield. As we see here it too still has side destination displays. (All Photographs by David Mee, 14th August 2021)

  1. Being an ex Bradford lad well used to the trolleybus fleet. its very prudent buying and refurbishment of used fleets and the near silent running as well as exceptional street movements in the right hands, well worth a visit. For the tour enthusiast the museum run a local tour of the Isle of Axholme which in itself a wonder.
