Six car parks across the Tyne and Wear Metro network are now accepting payment via the PayByPhone smartphone app as the latest move towards a Covid secure environment on the network is announced.
This cash free option for payment is simple and easy to use and is just the latest step from Nexus to give passengers more convenient and Covid-secure payment choices. This includes android phone season tickets for the Metro, the new Junior Blue smartcard for under 16s to pay for travel and online applications for concessionary travel cards.
Car parking can be paid for by the app at Bank Foot, Callerton Parkway, Regent Centre, Four Lane Ends, Northumberland Park and Stadium of Light. To pay all you need to do is download the PayByPhone App from the Apple App Store or Android’s Play Store.
Huw Lewis, Nexus Customer Services Director, said: “he PayByPhone app allows our customers to pay for Metro park and ride in a really convenient and covid secure way. It means you don’t need to carry any change, or use the pay and display ticket machines when using our car parks. We are committed to offering our customers more cash free and contactless payment options. It’s the convenience that customers want and it is vital in the Covid-19 era. We have now taken a range of steps to ensure we have more covid-secure payment choices. Park and ride is a more sustainable travel choice and is a popular way of getting into town and city centres. We expect this to become increasingly popular as coronavirus restrictions ease and more people start using public transport for work, education and leisure trips. The cost of Metro park and ride has gone up from £1 to £1.20. This is the first increase in eight years and it is needed to help us run a vital public service that doesn’t make a profit. It remains excellent value for a full day’s parking outside of congested city centres.”
