NET services to resume ahead of schedule

Services on Nottingham Express Transit will return to normal on Friday 12th April – three days ahead of schedule – following the completion of trackworks at the Noel Street crossing. Trams had only been able to operate between Station Street and The Forest and Wilkinson Street and Phoenix Park/Hucknall since Friday 29th March whilst this major engineering project was undertaken with a replacement bus service in operation over the closed sections.

Jamie Swift, Marketing Manager at NET, was understandably delighted that services are able to be start ahead of schedule: “We’re delighted that the maintenance work has been completed early and normal services will resume from the first trams on Friday morning instead of next Monday which was the original plan. We recognise the project has caused inconvenience to our customers and we are very grateful for their understanding and patience. The work was essential as we prepare for an increase in service frequencies next year and hopefully customers will see the benefits in the months ahead. It has been a complex engineering project and we’ve taken the opportunity to upgrade the crossing in an effort to reduce noise. Our construction partners in the Taylor Woodrow Alstom Joint Venture have pulled out all the stops to finish the work in order to get our services back to normal just as soon as possible. “We had undertaken the work over the Easter break to minimise disruption and, overall, our customers have been fantastic about it.”

During the disruption trams have run to normal frequencies on those sections they were able with a bus service linking The Forest and Wilkinson Street so passengers could complete their journeys as normal. Trams 201, 204, 205, 208, 209 and 214 (with 211 replacing 201 overnight on 6th April) were stationed away from the depot during the work which allowed the full service to operate and these were stabled at Station Street when not required for service.

1 Response to NET services to resume ahead of schedule

  1. John Stewart says:

I always though that the reversal of the conventional left-hand running arrangements between Noel Street and Wilkinson Street would saddle NET with both higher capital and maintenance costs and this current work illustrates this. I know that there were reasons for it; it’s just that I’m not convinced that it was value for money in the long term.
