Picture in Time: Glasgow 1297

We return to the Glasgow Garden Festival again for this edition of “Picture in Time” with a home tram being featured – Glasgow 1297.

As with last week’s tram (Edinburgh 35), the visit to the Glasgow Garden Festival was not the first time that Glasgow 1297 had been loaned elsewhere for a period of operation as it too had spent time in Blackpool where it was one of the popular visiting trams for the Tramway Centenary in 1985. Following that event 1297 returned to Crich, where it had been since July 1963, but it was soon on the road again heading back to its home city in time for the 1988 Garden Festival where it once again proved to be a very popular operating exhibit. After the festival it was back to Crich where it was put on display save for a brief period of operation between 2005 and 2007.

Two trams for the price of one in this photo! 1297 is in the foreground whilst in the background we can see the top of Paisley 68 which seems to be unloading passengers after a ride on the special tramway.
