Major NET rail replacement works to get underway from 20th June

Nottingham Express Transit services through the City Centre are to be disrupted for a month from Saturday 20th June to allow for major rail replacement works on the section between Old Market Square and Royal Centre – track which has been seeing trams run over it frequently since NET opened 16 years ago. The work will take slightly longer than originally planned to allow the contractors to use full social distancing guidelines.

Some preparatory work has already started (from Saturday 30th May) but this has take place overnight and so has seen no affect on the current NET timetable but between Saturday 20th June and Sunday 19th July this will not be the case with the line closed between Royal Centre and Nottingham Station throughout, although trams will continue to run to and from the city centre from the extremities of the network.

The track on Market Street between the two stops will be replaced in this month long closure. This track has been in place since the opening of NET, and is now 16 years old with many, many trams having travelled over it in that time. Market Street will be initially closed to traffic before it reopens to southbound buses on 11th July when Upper Parliament Street is closed. Diversions will be signposted and pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained throughout.

During these works the following service will run:

Hucknall/Phoenix Park to Royal Centre

– every 15 minutes 0600-0700 Monday to Saturday

– every 10 minutes 0700-2100 Monday to Saturday

– every 15 minutes 2100-0000 Monday to Saturday

– every 15 minutes 0600-0700 Sunday

– every 10 minutes 0700-1900 Sunday

– every 15 minutes 1900-0000 Sunday

Clifton South/Toton Lane to Nottingham Station

– every 15 minutes 0600-0700 Monday to Saturday

– every 10 minutes 0700-2100 Monday to Saturday

– every 15 minutes 2100-0000 Monday to Saturday

– every 15 minutes 0600-0700 Sunday

– every 10 minutes 0700-1900 Sunday

– every 15 minutes 1900-0000 Sunday

There will be no trams serving either Old Market Square and Lace Market throughout the work (20th June-19th July) and it won’t be possible for any service to operate either 0600 or after midnight on any day of the week.

There will be a replacement bus service running approximately every 7-10 minutes between Royal Centre and Nottingham Station. However, numbers able to be carried on this will be limited and NET are encouraging any one who is able to walk between the stops with an estimation for the length of this walk being 15-20 minutes.

Mike Mabey, NET Operations Manager, commented: “We’ve been operating for 16 years, and it has now become necessary to replace some of the older sections of track in the city centre so we can continue to operate a safe and reliable network, providing a comfortable journey for our customers. his work will take a little longer than originally planned so our contractor can stick to social distancing guidance, but the timing should mean it will disrupt fewer people given much lower numbers of passengers, traffic and city visitors than normal. Work will be completed as quickly as possible and noise prevention measures will be in place throughout the works, but we apologise for the inconvenience and any disruption it may cause. We would advise our passengers to allow some extra time for journeys. We thank our customers for their patience and understanding until full service resumes on Monday 20 July.”
