Picture in Time: Blackpool Brush 627

Another image take in 1990 for this edition of Picture in Time. This time around we feature one of the Brush Cars in service.

Taken on 24th March 1990 in this photo we see Brush 627 approaching North Pier just leaving the street track section around the Metropole Hotel as it operates a service going all the way south to Starr Gate. A fair spattering of passengers can be seen on board the tram which is in fleet livery with above window adverts for Super Bowl Ten Pin Bowling situated just beyond the Tower. At this time 627 was in its last few months as a trolley fitted car with the pantograph coming in June 1990.

627 was built as 290 and entered service in August 1937 remaining in service until 20th November 2004 although it was resurrected for one final hurrah in November 2009 when it was used on the Farewell to Fleetwood tours. Acquired by the organisation now known as the Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust the tram was thrust back into the limelight in 2012 when it received a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee livery and became the first tram to be displayed at Pleasure Beach. After a repaint into green and cream the tram remained there for the 2013 and 2014 illuminations before it was replaced by Centenary 641 and it was moved to Rigby Road Depot for storage only.
