Jasper Carrot to have tram named after him on West Midlands Metro

The West Midlands Combined Authority have confirmed that as part of the opening of the Birmingham Westside extension later this year they will be naming a tram after comedian Jasper Carrot. He will be recognised thanks to charity work over the years and his connection to the city as well as being one of the country’s most popular comedians during the 1970s and 1980s.

Exact details of which tram will be named and exactly when the naming may take place have not been made public but the announcement was made at the WMCA transport delivery committee meeting earlier this month.

A spokesman from Transport for West Midlands commented: “We have previously named trams after Ozzy Osborne and Cyrille Regis and these have proved popular with the travelling public. So we are keen to name more in honour of people who have made a significant contribution to the region. We are delighted that Jasper Carrott has agreed to be next and we will announce further details in due course. This is a period of great expansion for the West Midlands Metro network. We recently tested the battery powered tram in Birmingham city centre, a first for the UK, and will be opening the Westside extension to Centenary Square later this year.”

It has also previously been announced that Cllr Roger Lawrence will also be recognised by a tram naming but no further information has been forthcoming on this naming.
