In Pictures: Trackwork returns in Sheffield

After a short-break there is now more track replacement work taking place in Sheffield with two further areas to be attended to up until the end of August. Area 4a – Hillsborough Corner and Holme Lane – got underway on 17th August and will continue until 23rd August and this will then be immediately followed on 24th August by area 5 which will see work on Glossop Road at the University of Sheffield until 30th August. Once this is completed that will be that for the 2019 rail replacement programme with a full service then planned across the network. In this pictorial update we take a look at some of the work around Hillsborough Corner and Holme Lane from the camera of Stuart Cooke.

Trams were terminating at Hillsborough during this period and on Sunday 18th August there was remedial attention underway to the road surface at Hillsborough Corner but no work was needed to the track here which has already been replaced this summer.

On Monday 19th August and work had moved to the inbound line on Holme Lane between the old tram depot and Walkley Lane. In this view we see the old tram depot entrance in the background and the worksite cordoned off.

Looking along the line with new track waiting by the side and the old track removed and the culverts cleared for the new steelwork.

Another look into the worksite and here we can see more clearly where the old track has been removed and the culverts wait for new track to be put into place.

With the spacers to make sure the track is laid to the correct gauge in place this final view shows more ongoing work. (All Photographs by Stuart Cooke)
