Standard 143 runs under own power for first time!

As we continue to move towards the official launch of Blackpool Standard 143 a major milestone has been reached in its restoration – the tram has moved under its own power for the first time! The heritage workshops have continued to be a hive of activity in recent weeks with Balloon 707 getting closer to a return to the rails as well.

There is really only on place to start though and that is Standard 143. The lengthy and extensive restoration is now on the final straight ahead of its planned launch into service on 28th August. As well as work which has enabled it to move under its own power the most obvious progress has seen the front panels on the top deck now installed whilst attention has also been turned towards the stair treads and seats. As well as the usual Heritage Engineers they have also been joined by the Fylde Transport Trust’s coach builder who is providing assistance in the final stages of the restoration.

Also at Rigby Road Balloon 707 – due to return to service this year after a repaint into green and cream and other work – has been shunting around the depot ahead of its return to action. The project to overhaul this tram and get it back into use is mainly to provide further capacity during the illumination season and 707 should be ready in plenty of time for this role (as well as being used at other times on heritage tram tours).

And talking of the illuminations The Frigate has recently been moved into the Fitting Shop where it is being checked over and serviced ahead of its busy period during the Illuminations.

Back to the Fylde Transport Trust and work on the restoration of Railcoach 279 is currently paused to allow their coachbuilder to assist in the work on 143 and also whilst they await further funding to be received to complete this ambitious restoration. Before it was paused though the template roof dome was completed which will be used to create the domes for the finished project.
